Poem About Losing a Friend to Addiction and Finding Peace
“In Memory of You” is a raw and tender poem about losing a friend to addiction — a reflection of love, pain, and the promise to remember someone beyond their struggle.
I stand here today, with sorrow in my chest, For a friend I loved, who deserved only rest.
The weight of your battle, too heavy to bear, Took you from us, though you were always there.
You danced with shadows, a grip so tight, Addiction’s cruel chains stole away your light.
I watched you fight, I saw your pain, And prayed for the day you’d break free again.
But the hold was strong, and you slipped away, Though I begged the world for you to stay.
You were more than the struggle, more than the fight, You were laughter, and kindness, and warmth, and light.
I’ll remember the times before you were lost, Before the addiction demanded its cost.
The moments we laughed, the love we shared, In those, you were whole, in those, you cared.
Though you’ve gone where I can’t follow now, I’ll carry you with me, this I do vow.
Not defined by the struggle that took you too soon, But by the light of your soul, like the sun and the moon.
Rest now, my friend, your fight is through, I wish you peace that life never gave you.
I’ll miss you forever, but you are always near, In the memories we made, in every fallen tear.
